Censorship: Sex sells

Came across a rather shocking piece of news that was in a vernacular paper; seems that Malay teenagers were willing to subscribe to regular porn stories sent to their phones from an Indonesian service for RM17 a month (or was that a week? Think it was a month...). Like, what the hell? They're kids! Go read a Jackie Collins novel and flip to the dirty bits and fap away at that, my son.

Can you imagine that if they have 1,000 subscribers, that's a cool RM17,000 a month. I'm sure they have a lot more than that.

I tell you, gotta get me some of that ACTION! hehe but how? LOL Just kidding! (maybe)

Which brings me to the situation here, in our oh-so very 'moralistic' country where even the word "Beer" can be censored out of Beyonce's 'If I were a boy' single.

Imagine, if you will, that censorship were not as hidebound as it is now and that instead of people accessing porn illegally, it was taxed - goodness, it would exceed the revenue from the petroleum industry here!!

But seriously, the hypocrisy of being supposedly so 'clean' but by pushing all this underground - the only people who are benefiting from this are the syndicates and cops on the take. Porn videos, prostitution etc etc. People are willing to pay for all this, so the syndicates get rich, the cops involved get corrupted and kids who should be taught properly about sex, learn it from their friends and now, through their phones. Goodness knows what they're picking up but I would say, let your imagination run wild then times 3 and you'd probably get 75% of the picture. :P

Better to legitimise it, then it can be taxed and controlled in terms of health, intellectual property and safety i.e human trafficking, work conditions of the sex workers and so on.

Unfortunately, this won't happen any time soon. Malaysian politicians and the general population can be characterised as very conservative (but horny and hypocritical) and intellectually lazy - it's always easier to take the moral high ground to just BAN things and not to take the trouble to educate, control and manage the situation properly.
